                        Medical Marijuana

Marijuana has been used by cancer patients to control the pain of their disease as well as the nausea that often accompanies chemotherapy. It has helped people with AIDS to regain their appetite and prevent the severe weight loss that can interfere with medical treatment. It has been used in the treatment of a variety of other serious illnesses as well.

I believe that it was unconscionable for the federal government to overrule the voters of Arizona and California who chose to have this option available to them. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court, in the Raich case, decided that the federal government had the right, under current law, to prohibit the use of medical marijuana.

Introduced in the last Congress, the States' Right To Medical Marijuana Act would have taken this right away from the federal government and allowed each state to decide for itself whether to permit the use of marijuana with a doctor's prescription. As a physician, I strongly support this legislation. If I am elected, I will help to reintroduce it in the next Congress.
